Electricity contracts are available as either fixed-term or ongoing agreements. Fixed-term options include, for example, 6, 12, or 24 months.
With a fixed-term contract, both the monthly fee and the electricity price remain the same throughout the contract period, protecting you from price fluctuations.
When your contract period ends, we’ll contact you with an offer to update your electricity agreement.
If you don’t make any changes when the fixed-term contract ends, it will automatically continue as an ongoing contract, following our current standard price list.
If you move, your fixed-term contract will end—even if the contract period is still ongoing.
Remember to make a new electricity contract for your new home before you move.
An ongoing contract can be terminated with 14 days’ notice. Unlike fixed-term agreements, the price of an ongoing contract may change after 30 days’ notice from the electricity company.
The price you pay for electricity consists of three parts:
Electric energy – the electricity you actually use
Transmission (or distribution) – the cost of delivering that electricity to your home
Taxes
You can choose the company from which you buy your electric energy, but not your distribution network company.
You are always a customer of the local network operator based on your home’s location, and you pay the transmission fee according to their price list.
Because the energy supplier and the distribution company are often different entities, you’ll receive two invoices: one from your electricity seller and one from your distribution company.
The price of electricity is influenced by many factors.
Price increases and decreases reflect the cost of electricity production and changes in demand for energy.
For example, in 2022, electricity prices experienced exceptionally high volatility.
In addition to supply and demand, many production-related factors affect the price of electricity, such as the cost of fuels used for production and maintenance outages at power plants.
Weather conditions, especially in renewable energy production, play a major role – for example, hydro and wind power output depends heavily on current weather.
Transmission limitations for imported electricity to Finland can also impact prices.

kWh stands for kilowatt-hour, which is simply a unit of measurement for electricity use.
It describes how much electricity a device uses when it runs at 1,000 watts (1 kilowatt) for one hour.
So if you use a 1,000-watt appliance for one hour, you’ve used 1 kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity.
Pretty straightforward, right?
Electricity prices are usually listed in cents per kilowatt-hour.
So when you're comparing electricity contracts, check how much you're paying per kWh – that’s the price you pay for each unit of energy you use.
The kWh price can vary due to factors like:
The season (winter vs. summer)
Electricity production conditions
Total consumption
Market (spot) price fluctuations
Here are some rough annual estimates to help you understand typical household electricity consumption:
Studio apartment: 1,500–2,500 kWh/year
Row house or townhouse: 2,500–4,000 kWh/year
Detached house: 5,000–20,000 kWh/year
(depending on the heating method)
In the Nordic countries, the most common sources of electricity are hydropower, nuclear power, and wind. In Finland, electricity is also generated by burning wood, peat, and coal – although the use of coal and peat is gradually being phased out.
When you sign an electricity contract with us, you can choose how your electricity is produced. An optional origin certification can be added to your contract.
The available electricity origin options are Fossil-Free Electricity, Solar Electricity, and EKOenergy.
Do You Have a Fixed-Term Electricity Contract You’d Like to Terminate?
A fixed-term electricity contract cannot be terminated during the contract period. It is binding for both the customer and the electricity supplier for the full duration of the fixed term.
An exception applies if you're moving – in that case, you can either terminate the contract or transfer it to your new address.
If you're moving, you can easily handle this through the OmaLumme service, our chat, or by calling 029 1800 056 (local network/mobile charge). We'll help you end your current contract on the date you choose – and you can also sign a new electricity contract for your new home at the same time.
Did you know that your fixed-term Lumme Energia contract can be transferred to your new home? This is especially beneficial if electricity market prices have increased since your original contract was made.
Under the Finnish Electricity Market Act, an electricity supplier with a dominant position in a distribution network operator’s area is required to provide electricity to customers in that area.
At Lumme Energia, the products that fall under this supplier obligation include those available at our standard pricing and the market-based exchange electricity contract (Pörssisähkö).
You will receive your electricity bill either monthly or every two months, depending on the annual consumption at your delivery address.
Annual Consumption / Number of Invoices per Year:
Less than 12,000 kWh → 6 invoices per year
More than 12,000 kWh → 12 invoices per year
Monthly billing is always available upon request.
Please note that some contracts—such as the Tunti Lumme contract—require monthly billing as standard.
The due date for your electricity bill is 14 days from the invoice date.
The due date remains consistent each month according to your billing frequency (either monthly or every two months).
Want to Switch to Electronic Invoicing?
You absolutely can! Switching to e-invoicing means your electricity bill will arrive without postal delays – and won’t get lost among other papers.
You can conveniently order an e-invoice through your online bank, or now also directly via the OmaLumme service while handling your other electricity matters.
Please note that any invoices sent before setting up your e-invoice authorization must be paid via bank transfer.
In your online bank, you can choose whether the invoice is paid automatically or only after your approval.
